Whale Safari Guides

Species seen today: White-beaked dolphin, harbour porpoise, harbour seal, humpback whale.

Birds seen today: Atlantic puffin, northern gannet, northern fulmar, black-legged kittiwake, black guillemot, common guillemot, herring gull, eider duck, razorbill, great black-backed gull, lesser black-backed gull, long-tailed duck (duck with long tail), great cormorant, european shag.

09:00 - We had really good conditions today as we set off for our first tour of the day, with clear blue skies and not much wind. Almost immediately we found a small group of porpoises, which pushed our hopes even higher for the rest of the tour. Unfortunately nature was not on our side today, as even though we sailed to all the locations where we saw cetaceans yesterday, we did not find any more today. Everyone on the boats was satisfied though as the trip was beautiful, in really good weather, and we saw plenty of Atlantic puffins, fulmars, and even some gannets. We offered complimentary tickets for people to come back for another chance on the Classic tour.

12:00 - We left the harbour excited but unsure of what was awaiting us at sea as we had only seen porpoises in the morning tour. We decided to drive deep into the bay, keeping an eye on the conditions of weather, as the wind was picking up. After about 20 minutes or so luck was on our side and we found a group of around ten white beaked dolphins! It was a very interactive group and they swam all over the place, as they fed. They swam around and under the boats, and next to them, riding the wake of the boats. It was beautiful, everyone loved it, and took many photos. The dolphins came really close up. After several moments we decided to leave them alone and we sailed South. We did not see any more cetaceans but it was overall a very good tour because of the dolphins and the beautiful weather, views, and sea birds.

15:00 - With a half/half sky, we went out in search of some marine action. We had some bumps ahead, the combination of wind and swell wasn't very favourable, but it was still good enough for us to head out. And that's what we did, far far out, about 45 minutes of sailing to a place that was tipped off to us by another boat which promised some cool animals. When we got there, we saw 2 blows from 2 humpback whales but that's the only thing we saw. We saw it another time but nothing else for about half an hour. A bit disapponting from these gentle giants. The time was running out and so was the mother nature's patience, so we decided to head back to the harbour. We offered complimentary tickets to our passengers to have another go on the Classic tour with Elding.
