Whale Safari Guides

Whale Safari Guides

Species seen today: Harbour Porpoise

Birds seen today: Atlantic puffin, great black-backed gull, great cormorant, herring gull, northern fulmar, eider duck, brent geese, black guillemot, common guillemot, razorbill.

12:00 - The wind got down this noon so we went out to try to find cetaceans. We explored deeply around the island where a humpback was seen in the morning by larger boats but unfortunately the animal could not be seen anywhere. We stopped near Lundey to see some cute puffins in the water and went in direction of Grotta. Near this lighthouse we found a large pod of 14-18 harbour porpoises. They were quite easy to observe which is rare for this tiny toothed whales. We kept going but no luck so we had to head back to the harbour. We gave complimentary tickets to our passengers.

15:00 - Once more out at sea looking for whales. This time we directly went out, exploring the bay quite far out. We got quite hopeful seeing some active flocks of birds, sign that some fish is present in the area. Unfortunately we could not see any fin coming up or blow in the distance. We went in the south near Hafnarfjörður were a lot of fishing gear was flaged by small buoys. No dolphin or whale seemed to be wondering around so we came back in calmer sea close to Lundey and observed many adorable puffins flying around or sitting in the water. It was late so we came back to the harbour and gave complimentary tickets to our passengers.
