09:00 - Our day started with a clear sky, the sun shining strong, and a southbound wind but no waves. The temperature was so cold today that ice sheets were on the harbour as we left the dock. Off we went in search of cetaceans carrying more than 6 layers to combat the freezing wind. We sailed towards the middle of the bay hoping to see any type of life. There were plenty of birds including our freshly arrived puffins! Unfortunately, nothing came up so we decided to change course and also because the wind was getting stronger in that area. While we got closer to the whale fjord, we spotted a small fin from a harbour porpoise but it soon vanished. Oh well, let's continue and soon we saw another type of fin, this time more than one, there were 4 to 5 white-beaked dolphins that were sociable and decided to greet our dear passengers while bow-riding! At the same time, a blow was seen not too far so we went there to investigate what was that all about. It soon became obvious that this animal was bigger than the fun dolphins, it was a humpback whale! A busy one I must say, it was doing erratic dives always changing direction underwater but also coming close to us. While watching this beast we saw 1 minke whale that didn't want any business with us but still cool to see. The wind created even more white caps and we were already cold enough so we decided to head back to the harbour safe and sound!
