Whale Safari Guides

Species seen today: Minke whale, white-beaked dolphin, harbour porpoise

Birds seen today: Herring gull, black-headed gull, northern gannet, northern fulmar, common guillemot, eider duck, great cormorant

10:00 - The bay was relatively calm this morning and the visibility was good, so we could see the splashes of jumping white-beaked dolphins from a couple of miles away. We quickly went over to find the dolphins feeding among plunge-diving northern gannets and sometimes leaping out of the water. We then moved to the area where minke whales have been swimming around for the past few days and saw countless individuals. The minke whales sometimes came really close to the boat, and we almost constantly had something to see as individuals came up all around the area. While we were with the minke whales, a few harbour porpoises also visited us and gave us some good looks at their small bodies.

14:00 - With grey skies, we went out in a bit of rain and wind but nothing bad enough to stop us from seeing some cetaceans. We made our way to the middle of the bay and found some other whale-watching boats looking for something in the water. We also started to investigate and after a few spins around them, we were surprised by a minke whale that came 10 meters from the boat!! We could even see their white markings on the body and pectoral fins! We also smelled it, which is always an amazing smelly experience. We also spotted a pod of 5 to 6 harbour porpoises just porpoising around and making a few splashes. We saw the minke come really close again and suddenly everything went quiet. We were continuing our journey through the waves that were getting bigger and the wind stronger. The time was over so we returned to the harbor's safety. Everybody had a great time out there!
