Whale Safari Guides

Whale Safari Guides

Today we are going out on tours at 1000, 1200 and 1400!

Species seen today: Humpback whales and White-beaked dolphins.

10:00 - We decided to head south this morning to check out areas the larger boats hadn´t and to also stay in sheltered waters as yes it was very choppy on the ocean today. Soon we could see some large splashing going on, as we got closer we could see it was a humpback whale tail slappy and sometimes tail lobbing. We were also excited to see that it was a new individual to the area, one we had never seen before. Soon other vessels came to join and the whale became more elusive taking long dives. It wasn´t only the boats that came but white-beaked dolphins also. A large scattered pod of at least 6 individuals that started to move around the humpback. They even bowrode the boats too. I very quick and easy tour for us this morning.

12:00 - The wind had calmed slightly to allow us to venture more to the north but it was getting worse and worse the further we went so we turned more south to smoothen the ride. Soon we found a scattered pod of 2-3 white-beaked dolphins that were very playful and came to bow ride our boat. It was so much fun to watch them popping up either side of the boat just a meter away. They soon led us to an area where we could lots of birds, mainly sooty shearwaters and a few seagulls. Soon Captain Steini saw a blow. We got close and waited and waited and soon had 3 humpback whales coming up. Whoo hoo! Neila, Mariupol and Sooty where found. They were taking 10min dives but surfacing always in the same spot. All three didn´t surface at the same time, 2 would come up then next time 3 then next time 2. A drizzly, cold but great tour.

14:00 - We could see alot of boats around the trio of humpbacks on this tour so we went south again to find the 4th humpback, the one we found on the 10am tour but unfortunatly we couldn´t find it again. We did a big sweep to no avail. Once the other boats started to leave we headed over to the humpback trio and by that time we were alone with them, just how we like it. Once again they were surfacing in the exact same place but taking 10min dives. They were sleepy whales. Eventually though they were coming up more often and had them surfacing just a few meters away. Feeling comfortable with our presence, so much so they were still sleeping. Soon a large pod of 10 -12 white-beaked dolphins came rushing past, stopped quickly to come close to the boat and annoy the humpbacks, wake them up. They definitely did annoy them as they started to do loger dives of 10-15mins again. We left them in peace and headed home.
