Whale Safari Guides

Whale Safari Guides

Species seen today: Humpback Whales, minke whales, white-beaked dolphins,

10:00 - We were finally able to sail out after 4 days of cancellations. The swell was still quite high and the wind created quite a messy sea which meant we had to sail slower than usual to maximise the comfort to our passangers, however we couldn´t stop the occasional splash that came over the boat. We found an area with about 2-3 minke whales but they were being very difficult to follow, only surfacing once and disappearing for a long time. We were patient and tried the areas with alot of bird life in the end we gave up and tried a new area a few miles away. Here was where the action was. We found two humpback whales (Neila and Mariupol) two individuals we know very well and a pod of white-beaked dolphins leaping super high in the distance. The humpbacks surfaced freqently and calmly and soon the dolphins caught up with the humpbacks. They all started to play with each other, the humpbacks, particularly Neila, was rolling and flipper slapping and the dolphins leaping and having fun with both us and the humpbacks. It was amazing to encounter the two species interacting together. Once again our chance paied off with some incredible sightings and interactions.

14:00 - The wind had dropped considerably on this tour but the swell was still present but fun. We could see at least 5 boats around the humpback whales so we didn´t want to be a 6th. We wanted to wait a little until some of the boats left before we went to see them. We first tried the area were we had minke whales on the morning´s tour and saw at least 6 or 7 indiiduals but they are still difficult to follow, only surfacing once or twice before disappearing. We then headed over to the humpback whales Mariupol and Neila when there was less boats. Neila was being very friendly, surfacing super close to the boats and started to roll and flipper slap. Even coming within a few meters from us. It was absolutely amazing. Again it was an incredible day with the wildlife of Faxafloi.
